On the Cobordism Invariance of the Index of Dirac Operators

چکیده
We describe a “tunneling” proof of the cobordism invariance of the index of Dirac operators. The goal of this note is to present a very short proof of the cobordism invariance of the index. More precisely, if D̂ is a Dirac operator on an odd dimensional manifold M̂ with boundary ∂M̂ = M then we show that the index of its restriction D to M is zero. The novelty of this proof consists in the fact that we provide an explicit isomorphism between the kernel and the cokernel of D. This map can be viewed as a sort of “propagator” (see Sect. 4). 1. The setting Consider the following collection of data. (a) A compact, oriented, (2n + 1)-dimensional Riemann manifold (M̂, ĝ) with boundary ∂M̂ = M such that ĝ is a product metric near the boundary. We denote by s the longitudinal coordinate on a collar neighborhood of M . The various orientations are defined as in Figure 1. (b) A bundle of complex self-adjoint Clifford modules Ê → M̂ (in the sense of [BGV]). The Clifford multiplication is denoted by ĉ : T ∗M̂ → End (Ê).

Cobordism Invariance of the Index of a Transversally Elliptic Operator
1. The SpinC-Dirac operator and the SpinC-quantization In this section we reformulate the “SpinC-quantization commutes with cobordism” principal in a more analytic language. In Subsection 1.1, we briefly recall the notion of SpinC-Dirac operator. We refer the reader to [2, 6] for details. We also express the SpinC-quantization of an orbifold M = X/G in terms of the index of the lift of the Spin...
متن کاملCusp geometry and the cobordism invariance of the index
The cobordism invariance of the index on closed manifolds is reproved using the calculus Ψc of cusp pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with boundary. More generally, on a compact manifold with corners, the existence of a symmetric cusp differential operator of order 1 and of Dirac type near the boundary implies that the sum of the indices of the induced operators on the hyperfaces is null.
متن کاملNew Proof of the Cobordism Invariance of the Index
We give a simple proof of the cobordism invariance of the index of an elliptic operator. The proof is based on a study of a Witten-type deformation of an extension of the operator to a complete Riemannian manifold. One of the advantages of our approach is that it allows to treat directly general elliptic operator which are not of Dirac type.
متن کاملBoundaries, Eta Invariant and the Determinant Bundle
Cobordism invariance shows that the index, in K-theory, of a family of pseudodifferential operators on the boundary of a fibration vanishes if the symbol family extends to be elliptic across the whole fibration. For Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition, Dai and Freed [5] gave an explicit version of this at the level of the determinant bundle. Their result, that the eta invariant of ...
متن کاملFamilies Index for Pseudodifferential Operators on Manifolds with Boundary
An analytic families index is defined for (cusp) pseudodifferential operators on a fibration with fibres which are compact manifolds with boundaries. This provides an extension to the boundary case of the setting of the (pseudodifferential) Atiyah-Singer theorem and to the pseudodifferential case of the families Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators due to Bismut and Cheeger an...
